Breast Cancer Awareness Month

By Emma Bley ’15

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout all of October, Breast Cancer awareness is extremely enforced. The National Breast Cancer Foundation has many events throughout the entire year. Yet, throughout October, there are various main events because of the focus on this specific month.

Through the National Breast Cancer Foundation, there are fundraisers available for participation and also opportunities to start new fundraisers for breast cancer awareness. Through the Foundation’s website, there are opportunities to enact an early detection plan for breast cancer. This simple action can make a large impact onto many people’s lives.

Within athletics, high school and professional, athletes incorporate pink into their uniforms to raise awareness of Breast Cancer. For example, football players will wear pink shoes, pink gloves, and sometimes even a complete pink uniform. This is to raise awareness of Breast Cancer and to show their support.

One main event that occurs during the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is the Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K. The American Cancer Society Making Strides walk has raised more than $36,000. This 5K takes place in the Grand Rapids on Saturday October 25th.
