On February 9, 2015, the biggest game of women’s college basketball this season took place. Number 2, UCONN, and number 1 ranked South Carolina faced off in primetime. Coming into this game UCONN, who was 22-1, had only lost to Stanford in their second game of the season by 2. South Carolina had been undefeated before last night’s game, falling to UCONN 87-62.
South Carolina was not able to match the level of intensity or skill of the UCONN Huskies. The Huskies had 4 of their starters finish the game in double figures. Senior Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis racked up 23 points, followed by junior Breanna Stewart who had 22 points. UCONN as a team shot 55% from the floor and played strong defense forcing 17 South Carolina turnovers. South Carolina’s lead scorers were sophomore Tiffany Mitchell and senior Aleighsa Welch, both with 17 points.
Both teams will be strong contenders in the NCAA Tournament in March. Last season both teams were the number 1 seeds. UCONN went on to win the whole thing for their second year in a row, finishing their season undefeated. South Carolina lost to North Carolina in the Sweet 16. One thing that is for sure is that if these two teams meet in March it will be a fun game to watch!
