On April 7th the Varsity Track & Field team headed north to Wayne High School for their first meet of the season. The track team arrived at Wayne an hour and a half early to allow time for everyone to get warmed up. The team started off doing their annual warm up but it started pouring, so the coach called for everyone who wasn’t running in the first race to get under the bleachers and stay dry.

Moments before the gun was fired to signal the start of the 6400m relay, and the start of the meet, the rain stopped, and a hush went over the crowd. You could feel the tension in the air as everyone awaited the sound of the gun. The starter yelled “ Get Set”, then BANG the meet had begun.

The first event was the 6400m relay, and is it by far the longest race and usually takes up about 30 or so minutes as each girl in the four person relay has to run a mile. After the 6400m relay all the other races followed suit.

The running events which include sprints, middle, long-distance, and hurdling, a race where you jump over hurdles as you run, are won by the athlete with the fastest time. Where the field events, which include long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vaulting, shot put, javelin, discus, and hammer, are won by the athlete who achieves the greatest distance or height.

The Mercy Track & Field team competed in all the running events as well as long jump, discus throw, shot put, and high jump. Long Jump is when an athlete combines speed, strength, and agility in an attempt to jump as far as possible. Discus Throw is when an athlete attempts to throw a heavy disc farther than their competitor. Shot Put is when an athlete throws a heavy sphere as far as possible. High Jump is an event where competitors must jump over a horizontal bar placed at certain heights until they can’t jump any higher.

Everyone who competed in the meet at Wayne High School did a wonderful job. Many won medals in their individual events and every runner scored for the team. Overall the Mercy Track & Field team placed 4th among the 17 girl teams.
