Music Soothes the Soul

Jody Hetzel ‘19

“Where words fail music speaks”-Unknown. Music has been an inspiration to many people. There are many different genres of music like rap, country, alternative, blues, children’s music, classical, comedy, commercial, dance, electronic, holiday, jazz, pop, reggae, rock, instrumental, and many others. People are so obsessed with music that it’s getting dangerous. People will drive with with their music too loud or walk in the street with headphones in. Doing this blocks out any of the noise that needs to be heard. If someone honks their horn at you and you don’t hear it you could get run over. If you are driving and the music is to loud you suffer the consequences of not hearing a siren.

I love listening to music. I remember when I was going through a tough time I would listen to music and it would calm all of my frustrations, anxieties, and stress. I normally listen to pop music but I also enjoy rap, country, and holiday. It really just depends on my mood and what I want to listen too. If I’m doing homework and I really need to pay attention, I might listen to classical music. If I’m in the mood to dance and sing I might listen to pop, rap, or musical. Christmas is the best time of the year in my opinion because of Jesus’ birth and the amazing songs. I interviewed 62 mercy students and asked what their favorite genre of music was, below are the results.

Alternative- 6 people

Rap- 17 people

Country- 9 people

Pop- 25 people

Indie/Folk- 5 people
