Rainbow Paper Wreath (DIY)

Elizabeth Davis ’19

If you are looking for a creative gift idea, or a fun DIY, I would recommend trying this rainbow paper heart wreath. You should be able to find most of these materials at home, and it takes very little time to make. This craft became a Mother’s Day gift this past weekend, and my mom loved it!

Before you start, here are a few things you will need:

  • Colorful cardstock paper
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Ruler
  • Paper cutter (recommended, but you can just use scissors-I did)
  • Ribbon (optional depending on how you choose to display it)

Step 1: For any craft I do, I begin by gathering all my materials to the place I plan to use for crafting. I also, personally, like to listen to music while I work. You could watch a TV show, movie, or just focus on your craft.

Step 2: Choose the colors you want to use. I used: orange, yellow, blue, pink, and green. Then cut the paper into one inch strips.

Step 3: Once you have all the strips you want (I used ten, but the exact amount will depend on how big you want your wreath to be),  you take the strip and fold it in half. Then bring the two ends together to form a heart shape, and staple them together.

Step 4: Now that you have all of your paper hearts, choose the shape you wish to make out of them. I chose to make a circle, and I think this is the easiest choice. Make sure to lay out the hearts in the order you want to staple them in. To avoid seeing the staple marks, staple on the opposite side of the wreath that you plan to display. Once you have achieved the order and shape you like begin stapling your hearts together.

Step 5: You can choose to attach a ribbon to your wreath if you choose. When I did this the first time, it didn’t quite work the way I wanted. I added more hearts to my wreath than I really needed. The second time I used less paper hearts, and placed the two ends of the ribbon closer together. Place the ribbon in the top crease of the heart and staple it to secure it.

Remember, you can really have fun with this. You can choose to add a fun dangling piece (as shown in the Pinterest picture), you can change up the shape (also seen in a Pinterest picture), and of course, play with the color scheme of your wreath. You could make one for every season! Whether it’s used for a gift or for room decor, the cardstock paper wreath is an easy and creative DIY anyone can do with just the materials found at home.
